LTL vs. FTL Freight Shipping: What’s The Difference?

Businesses that need to ship items have two options when it comes to cost-effective shipping of parcels. LTL, or Less Than Truckload, is one option. The other is FTL, or Full Truckload. There are pros and cons to each shipping method. The volume of the parcels that are being shipped is often the deciding factor in which type of shipping is the best option for a business. Learn more about these two types of shipping methods below!

LTL Freight Shipping

LTL is a good shipping option when businesses need to ship a large number of parcels, but the total number of parcels isn’t enough to fill an entire truck. With LTL shipping, the size of the shipment will be calculated carefully. Then, additional packages from other shipments will be added to fill in the extra space so that the entire space of the truck can be filled and shipped simultaneously.

LTL is an excellent method for businesses that don’t want to have to pay for an entire truck’s worth of space. E-commerce sellers, small businesses, and businesses that don’t have large parcel loads to ship can benefit from LTL shipping because the cost is usually lower. Since several companies share space on one truck, the price is proportional to how much of the truck your business’ parcels are taking up. However, the fact that many shipments are on one truck means that the truck has to make several stops to unload. The speed of shipping can be delayed because of the stops that the truck needs to make to unload separate shipments of goods.

FTL Freight Shipping

FTL, or Full Truckload, shipping is the best shipping method for businesses that are shipping big parcel loads. When businesses have large loads that can fill up an entire trailer, or most of the trailer, the truck will be dedicated to their shipment alone. This means that the truck will be able to deliver the parcels faster because fewer stops & unloading are necessary. With only one load from one company on board, the truck doesn’t have to make multiple stops to load and unload parcels the way it does if a business is shipping LTL. FTL is much more time-efficient if you need to get parcels to their destination quickly!
